V6 clacking

Hi all,
I've got a 97 2.7L V6 that is clacking. It used to be just when it was cold and would go away when it warmed up. It would stop clacking instantly like someone throwing a switch! From what I've read, it sounds like lifters. I've tried using Gunk engine flush-you put it in and fast idle for 5-10 minutes then oil change. I've tried Seafoam-1/2 can in the oil for 1000 miles. Still clacking, in fact now the clack comes and goes even when it's warm. When it goes away it is still like someone throwing a light switch. Help please.
Thanks, Mark

It does sound like the valve are in need of adjusting... unfortunately it requires mechanical work. If the valves are too far out of spec it can cause lower gas mileage and power.

Ok. I have never done that but last week I helped a friend replace hydraulic lifters in his Dodge Stealth twin turbo. That's not really adjusting, just popping the old ones out and the new ones in. Is there much to adjusting them? Does a Chilton manual show how to do a V6?
