Vehicle speed sensor, or what?

My 95 Accord wagon with 91,000 miles did something weird today on the highway,.

Running 65mph with the cruise control on, the speedo dropped to zero and the cruise control kicked off.

The torque converter came out of lock-up as the rpm's increased about 200.

One minute later, the speedo started working again, but the transmission stayed unlocked. The D4 light blinked continuously.

Later, after I had shut it down and started it again, all was normal.

Should I be ordering a VSS, or is it likely something else?

I once had a VSS fail on my 94, but it did not cause the D4 light to blink.

Check the codes before blindly replacing the VSS. In the common diy thread on top of the gen tech help forum, there is a link on how to check engine codes.

Even if the engine and transmission error codes point to the VSS, you can first check it's plugs in the wiring harness for corrosion/dirt/looseness.

No CEL. What am I going to check? OBTW, there is not thread in the DIY section for pulling codes - unless it is buried in another thread. I was looking for a thread titled something about codes.
