VSS question

I'm just buying a 1996 Accord EX with the 2.2L vtec and auto transmission, and currently the speedometer, odometer and cruise control all don't work. The speedometer cluster has been replaced with a newer one so I can pretty much rule that out. These three all not working leads me to believe it is the VSS that is bad, but I have also read that the VSS would throw a check engine light. There is no check engine light. So my question is can the VSS still be bad without throwing a light?

Does your check-engine light come on for 2 seconds when you first turn the key on? (check for burned-out bulb)

I guess it's possible for the VSS to be OK, and the PCM gets the proper signal from the VSS, but the circuit is broken before that signal gets to the cluster.

Are you certain the replacement cluster works? Its far more common on 94-97 accords for the cluster to break than for the VSS.

There's no check engine light at all even when I turn the key at the beginning. Burned out bulb? i might take it to the auto store and see if it pulls any codes even without the light because I dont know how much I can trust the cel.

If the CEL doesn't come on for 2 seconds then it's either a burned-out bulb or a previous owner cleverly disabled it by cutting a wire or covering the lamp with electrical tape.

Check your fuses. There is a fuse box in the engine bay and one under the driver's dash. The cover for the fuse box has labels for the fuses. The owner's manual may have that information.

i've got a 94 ex 2.2. The speedometer, tachometer, and gas gauge were all dropped, and between a couple of 10a fuses and a new v.s.s. the problems were fixed. btw I got my v.s.s. online for like 30 bucks, so don't get ripped off

I fixed the Speedo. 30 dollar VSS from that rock auto website. :) odometer of course is working with it, but still no cruise... hmm
