cat help

I have a fully built f23a1 w/ turbo. I'm currently running no cat, the smoke is killing me. What would be the best 3" cat.

RE: cat help

There's a 3" dynomax one on Jegs.com. The one from Magnaflo (also on jegs) looks good too (says it's high flo), but I haven't used either of them.

the smoke????????? what color is it? a cat will absolutely not stop any smoke, you have a serious problem.

RE: cat help

The smoke is white, the car is running real rich. The AEM EMS was bad and I had to pull it out and send it back. The VTEC wasn't kickin in. The smog is what's killing me.

RE: cat help

a cat will not help at all.....white smoke usually means blown head gasket. blue is oil...black is when its too rich. when you take off your cat it doesnt start to blow smoke.

RE: cat help

It could also be a bad oil ring (I hope not). But I won't know until I bring it back to the shop.

RE: cat help

no the smoke would be blue...very noticable blue if you had a bad oil ring. its your headgasket probably. its definatly not a ring though. and def not a problem with you not having a cat

RE: cat help

even if the head gasket is new? Could be possible I am boost'n @ 14 psi. Can you tell if you do a compression chk if the head gasket is bad, because they did that and all 4 cyl were perfect.

RE: cat help

The other reason I want a cat is to quiet it down a bit. what do you know about random technology?

lightshow 03-08-2006 01:49 AM

RE: cat help

i mean im not saying its for sure...... that your head gasket is blown. maybe its just cold out when all that white fog puffs out of your muffler. maybe thats what it is. they probably compression tested it when they first put the head gasket on. and now that you have run it.....you have discovered where their work was not completely professional... dont be in denial though. blown head gaskets are bad. oil can get into the coolant, and coolant can get into the oil.

i do know a little about random technology....on cat back exhaust tests on a turbo vehicle, they were not only the cheapest exhaust, but they also produced the smallest hp and torque gains. thermal r & d produced the best gains and they were priced just about the RT. i dont know about RT cats though. you should just put a resonator on your car, that will quiet it down alot

RE: cat help

After I changed my exhaust from a 2.25 to a 3 and take the cat off is when i notice the smoke. There was no smoke before that. Then I took the car in to get some exhaust leaks fixed that were coming from the wastegate. And to get re-tuned. That's were they check'd everything. I have a magnaflow resonator on now. It's not heavy smoke and there's no oil and water mixed any where. All my fluids are good. The ems just isn't tuned. But I will have them chk the head gasket when i bring it back.

RE: cat help

make sure u get a low sound cat converter, most hi flow cats have some loud horrible sound that overtakes the rest of the exhaust smooth sound. my hi flow cat is a good cat but dont like the high sound. and my mid section pipe from arospeed sounds like crap, im selling my arospeed mid section pipe, fits all 90-93 Honda Accords, perfect condition, its been used for about 3 weeks so far, the pipe is not defective, i just dont like the sound it makes from the built in muffler.

RE: cat help

I went with the Metal Cat and I installed a 3" glasspack to quiet it down a bit. The sound went down so much and there is no smoke at all. It sound great and still spools up fast. I'm running about 17 psi of boost. The people at AEM are great the shipped my EMS back to me in about a week and a half. The VTEC kicks in every time. I'll get it re-tuned next week and I should see 300whp, but we'll see.
