Squeaky Noise After Cold Air Intake Install
 

Hi all,

So last night I installed a Spyder cold air intake. Took my awhile, but I finally got it. As soon as I started driving, however, I noticed there was a squeaking noise when I accelerated. It's more noticeable when I'm driving than if I'm listening with the hood open, but that may just be because of the engine noise. I don't think it's any of the belts, because it wasn't present until after I put the CAI in.

Any ideas what this could be? Maybe a vacuum leak? I re-tightened all the connections, but it's still there. Hoping it's nothing serious!

Don't take this the wrong way but I'm not a fan of CAI for a few reasons.....these types of issues being one.

There is/was at least one hose connected to the OE intake. Forget exactly where it runs, but be sure it is either capped off or connected to the new intake.

Also check the new intake. Some have sound that under load and higher rpms that there is movement in the intake letting it make contact with "X". Creating noise...rattle, squeek, ect? So something like a clamp not being tight, a support that is missing, ect.

EDIT: Found a Pic of the tube that connects to the oe intake tube....couldn't find the "other end" and what it goes to but with this you might be able to tell us.

Ha, after this I can certainly see why.

I did re-connect the tube, and the intake came with some rubbing tubing that I used to attach it. As far as I can tell, there's no air coming out of there. The other end goes right into the engine.

I read on some Acura forum that this is common with some Acura's and Honda's for some reason. The noise is always there, but just "silenced" by the resonator.

I think it may be from the intake not being properly mounted. The metal part typically used for mounting on my intake is in the completely opposite direction, so it can't be mounted to the support bar near the battery. Still trying to think of an easy way to mount it.

Just to make sure each end was sealed, I went out and bought two of these breather filters to clamp on. I also remove the intake from the throttle body and replaced the hose clamps that came with it with better ones because they were slightly loose. Drove it around for a few miles and the squeaking has been mostly alleviated. Those little filters look... special, but at least they helped.

Edit: I'm hoping the little bit of squeaking that's left is because it's only mounted with HID ballasts and zip ties haha.

Your 2 little special filters...

First, I don't think that's the real problem with the sound. When you find another source for the sound you might want to hook it back up the way it was & see how that works.

Second, you really only needed one of those filters. The one from the engine. The other filter that's attached to the big air-intake duct - you could have simply plugged that opening.

They helped quite a bit actually, but you're right, I don't think it's the only source of the noise because it's still there a little bit. I only put one on the intake because I couldn't find something to plug that hole with and my little brother has some extras. Any ideas on something to plug it with? I've seen people use something like a nail, or bolt covers, but both sound iffy to me.

I've seen actual plastic plugs just for that purpose. But I've used all kinds of things. Clevis pin from the hardware store? Taper pin?

How is your PCV valve? If that is messed up, that might explain why this vent helped somewhat.

The vacuum of the intake manifold is supposed to suck air out of the crankcase, through the PCV valve. This vent line allows clean air into the crankcase to make up for what's sucked out.

Good to know, I'll try and find some tomorrow. It looks like mushrooms are growing out of my engine bay with all those midget filters.

I'm not sure about the PCV valve, but I'll definitely check the manual I have and then try to find it tomorrow to look it over. Should I be looking for cracks, leaks, etc? Thanks!
