Don't know if this has been posted before, but I thought this was a neat video since so many people have had this problem:

i wishi knew about that tool lol, i just went and bought a new crank pully this am because i was unable to break the bolts on the cars at the scrap yards, gave up and went to the parts store.....$115.00 later vs 50 for a tool i could have resold or kept incase i had to do it again...

well i didnt buy the tool but i did remove my started on my 5speed transmission (not too shure where its located on an automatic) but in the starter opening, i plaved a rather large flat head screw driver and turned the crank by hand slowly untill i knew the flywheel/clutch had wedged the driver and then i was able to tighten the bolt as tight as i could without the motor turning over...and looseing is the same ... but it does mean removeing the starter
