New member debating buying an Accord for the first time
Hi all,
I just found this forum after searching around on the Internet. I've been searching for a car for my son and daughter to drive to school. I've pretty much narrowed my search down to 2 vehicles: Honda Accord coupe or an Acura CL, probably in the 1999-2001 range, and definitely with an automatic. I like them both for different reasons, but here is my dilemma. I understand that there is an issue (to some degree) with the transmission on 2001 Accords, at least according to this site:
http://www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/A..._failure.shtml
I want to avoid any unnecessary problems if at all possible. Are there any hot spots I should know about with, let's say, the '99 or '00 Accords? Is the transmission in the CL the same as the one in the Accord? Or is there a way to minimize the troubles with the '01's transmissions? My price range is probably up to around $8500, and I'm willing to purchase a car with 'reasonable' miles.
Mods -- feel free to relocate this post if necessary -- I didn't really know where else to place it!

Yes, the transmissions in the 98-02 Honda Accords had problems. From what I have heard, there is about a 50/50 chance the trans will go out, or itcould be A-ok.
I have heard the addition of a transmission cooler may help.
I am pretty sure the CL auto trans is just as bad as the Accord trans - if not worse.
The warranty was extended to 100k miles or 7 years I believe. So, for example,if you buy 02 with less than 100k miles, the trans will still be under warranty.
If I were going to buy an Accord with an auto trans, I would either buy a 5th gen (94-97 model), a 7th gen(03-07 model), or I would take the 6th gen (98-02) I was looking at to a Honda Certified shop to check the trans before I bought it.
