Default 1990 LX Sedan door panel insert ideas

So my 1990 LX Sedan, which spent a tremendous amount of time parked in my in-law's garage, is now sitting in my office parking lot most days baking in the sun all day. The adhesive on all four cloth inserts in the door panels gave up and they are all loose. I tried reattaching the driver door insert with headliner adhesive, but it quickly turned into a stick mess that wouldn't cure. I carefully removed the cloth so I can reinstall it, but I actually kind of like the look without it. The problem is that I cannot get all of the residual adhesive off. I have tried several solvents to remove it, including Goo Gone, but nothing touches it. Most information I have found indicates that people reattach the cloth insert and it lasts a short time and falls apart. Has anyone successfully reattached the cloth or used some other approach to customize their door panels? I've thought about vinyl dye, but with some of that adhesive still there, I don't want a ghetto-looking mess. Thanks for your ideas.

Gasoline, brake cleaner, acetone?
any of those will do baaaaad things to vinyl pretty quick so don't leave them on there, but I used acetone to remove some discoloration on my door cards. Follow that with vinyl dye and you could be good to go
