Default Stock Shifter Removal

Okay, what a noob question this must sound like... 96 LX 5spd - how do I remove the stock shift ****? I can disconnect the boot just fine but can't get the **** to budge. I am told it simply unscrews counter clock wise but mine won't move with hand force and I am unwilling to try a tool unless I absolutely sure I can remove it without damaging the ****.

Thanks!

Also, sorry if this is posted in the wrong place... Mods feel free to move if that is the case.

The **** unscrews counter-clockwise... The reason it will not budge by hand is more than likely the age and length of time it has been on the car... Get yourself a cloth and wrap it around the ****, then take a pair of vise grips and lock on to the **** with the cloth around it, then turn the ****, it may take some force but should come off...
