well, being somewhat of an audiophile myself, pioneer is good, if you go to there higher end. Basically, what you want to look for in a deck is 5V pre-outs. thats going to give you cristal clear sound.

Pioneer: http://www.cardomain.com/item/PIODEHP7800MP?vq_id=none
(basically 7800 and up models will have 5V preouts)

Eclipse: http://www.cardomain.com/item/ECLCD3000?vq_id=none
(my favorite/ one i have)

Pioneer: better screen, but not a fan of the single dial

Eclipse: more simple screen, little smaller dials, but those dont matter cuz it sounds soo good at 74 volume out of 80, which is plenty loud.

but thats just my $.02

I'd agree that getting something with 5V pre-outs helps, they should be gold plated and if possible get a deck with Burr-Brown DAC's, I've got a mid-high end fosgate deck that was only about $350.00 that I'd say is amazingly clear, especially with a component speaker system.... I'd also probably stay away from low end pioneer stuff, not horrible but not that great either, In my opinion, and don't even think about Jensen ever, please..

eclipse makes the CD2000 for 200 bucks and still had 5V preouts.

but realistically, any new deck is going to sound better than stock.

How much are you looking to spend? Consider a remanufactured unit then.... still work great but much cheaper.... Personally I don't care much for Sony or Jensen but I'd say Rockford, Alpine, Eclipse are all reputable decks and going to sound better than a friggen JVC....

Aiwa makes a great deck too! I have that, and it has an input for an iPod or any other mp3 player. I picked it up from walmart for about $80 to replace the piece of crap Durabrand junk thing. I have the box right here so heres everything
Its an Aiwa CDC-X144
Cd-r/rw playback
7 preset/3 band eq
DSSA (dont know what that it)
H-Bass (works really well if I turn my subs off)
Source Level adjuster (really nice, so when you go back to the radio you dont blow your eardrums)
Front input
pre sub
Dimmer
DFP (?)
You can also change the color from amber to green really easily and its cool!

The picture makes it look darker than it really is
