Phone Charger in Glasses Holder
I have installed a charger in the flip down glasses holder. This idea came to mind when I stuck my Iphone up there out of bordem. When I realized it fit quite well I know I had to do this.
First I removed the plastic light cover. I then removed the screws nest to the bulbs and the two in the flip down opening. When these are out the whole piece should come out.
There is a little plug that pops out for power. It was easy to remove. I used a Vampire connecter to scab in a wire for 12 volts that runs to the Map lights. This wire is a constant 12 volts also which is what i wanted. I dont remember the color of this wire but if you poke your multimeter probe through the plastic coating its easy to find.
As for a place to run your wire into the gasses holder portion of the assembly the picture shows where i ran mine. I didnt have the right tools on me at the time so forgive the rough hole i made with My Buck pocket knife.
I used a mini usb cable as it has different attachments for different devices. To power this cord I actual used a cigarette lighter usb charger. Just solder your positive lead to the positive and the negative to the negative on the usb charger. I used the screw next to one of the bulbs as a ground which worked ok.
You can wrap this in electrical tape or find a project enclosure to house this. It might fit into a film case.
I stuffed all that up in the headliner and Reinstalled the assembly and now i can charge my phone up there. Pretty cool. I have bluetooth on my stereo too so i just do handsfree calling. As for texting....it keeps me from doing that while driving...lol
