Installing anti corrosive washers on the terminals beneath the clamps will help retard the corrosion once cleaned up. Here's a picture if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Try a little cleaning and it will work just fine..
Wire brush...battery terminal cleaner, battery brush combo kit..all found in your AutoParts store in the battery section.
Then do as RTex says , use corrision protection to keep it from getting corroded again or fix your alternator that is more than likely overchargeing your battery which is more than likely making the acid come out of the battery and corroding the top...phewww...that's alot of words.

I like to put axle grease on the terminals after cleaning them with baking soda water mix. Never had corrosion problems.

my honda dealer did my 90K service and cleaned the terminals and sprayed them with some purple stuff that almost loosk like nail polish. 6 months and 10K miles later not a sign of any corrision.

Ummm.....wouldnt that be a bad idea? Ecspecially if the water made a circuit between the positive and negative terminal. Be careful if you do that, I dont think battery acid in your face would be to pleasant.
