2004 Accord Map Lights & Sunglass Holder fix, with photos

My 2004 Accord is a great car with just a few items needing some work. This was my oldest daughter's car while she was in college. She wanted to purchase a new car after graduation, but received low trade-in offers for a 10+ year old Accord.
https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453047473 On the other hand, I was looking for a daily driver over the winter after my second oldest daughter took our 1998 Civic to college. I decided to 'buy' the Accord and we agreed on its value, but since the Accord was already titled and registered in both our names, there were no sales taxes, title fees, etc. to increase the total. Getting back to those few items needing work, I noticed both map lights illuminated when using the clear lens as the switch. However, only the driver side map light in the console assembly illuminated when opening one of the car doors, along with the rear dome and door lights. In the grand scheme of things, the passenger side map light not illuminating when opening a door was no big deal. As the expression goes, a First World problem. However, the sunglasses holder began opening unexpectedly, and I decided those two issues would be great. This forum helped me get started with a previous thread ... Thread link: https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...343/#post64788 ... and I decided to provide a photographic 'how-to' thread. The next several posts will include photos of the work restoring full functionality to the console assembly map lights and secure locking to the sunglasses holder. To keep any single post from getting too long, six photos will be my limit. https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453047473 Happily, the 'procedure' was quite inexpensive, but more on that later. The next post will get the procedure started... |

The cam lock was an unexpectedly simple part. I overthought this step far too much in advance. Removal and installation turned out quite simple. Remove the original with a small screwdriver and install the replacement with a finger press... https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453048806 The procedure moved along nicely. Now the map lights need some attention. |

13. As noted previously, the map lights are next.

However, a previous thread in this forum provided a source for my purchase. https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453049073 16. https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453049073 17. https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453049073 18. https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453049073 This procedure is moving closer to completion! |

19. The replacement parts are installed. Time to put the Accord together.

With all connections complete and hardware installed once again, unlocking and opening the Accord's doors illuminates both map lights... https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453049354 22. The sunglasses holder opens and closes, hopefully as well as when new... https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453049354 23. The procedure is now complete, and the patient has responded superbly! https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453049354 With the procedure complete, the next post will provide more information about the repair parts. |

Replacing part 21, the 'Cam Set, Lock' returned the sunglasses holder back to correct operation.
https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453049550 The vendor I used (there are other sources for parts), a full diagram and parts list appears at the following link... 2004 Honda Accord 4 Door EX KA 5AT Interior Light - HondaPartsNow.com The 'Cam Set, Lock' replacement part is very inexpensive and the buyer would likely pay more for shipping. |

The replacement switches are not separate items on the Honda parts list. Fortunately, the switches are available from a few retail sources.
https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ine=1453049686 My purchase of SPED210200 switches came from the following web site ... www(dot)mouser(dot)com/ProductDetail/ALPS/SPED210200/?qs=%2fha2pyFadujxbTjVYNFXhnXvZir2X4WKQulzrDSDL2gt zlfYnNfLHA%3d%3d ... and required about a week for processing and shipping. As with the cam lock, shipping cost more than the product itself. The switch operates quite silently. I was expecting a slight metallic click while operating the switch, but heard none. With the 'procedure' now complete and the 'patient' discharged, best wishes if you attempt the same! |
Nice write-up. I'm going to move it into the "DIY" section which we use as a kind of library of instructions.
(I modified the active link so it isn't active but can be copy-pasted into a browser) |
Thanks Jim....was thinking the same about moving it.
"Othello" - can I ask the the general price of the map light switches? I only ask as I'm trying to decide if I want to fix one of my map lights in the 07 Pilot I have. I found that Dorman offers them - PN 924-798 |

"Othello" - can I ask the the general price of the map light switches? I only ask as I'm trying to decide if I want to fix one of my map lights in the 07 Pilot I have. I found that Dorman offers them - PN 924-798 The map light switch purchase unit price was under a dollar. The vendor is now out of stock but apparently has an order coming in. The shipping cost was very reasonable, but still far more than the unit price. The total was about ten dollars, delivered. I was surprised to see the very low unit price, but it tipped the scales for going ahead and attempting the repair. From prior posts on the subject, I wasn't 100% sure whether the switch was the problem. But the cost of finding out was so low, the decision was fairly easy. Removing the base from the console assembly and tracing the conductors, which are right out in the open, I concluded the switch was the most likely potential failure point. Not surprisingly, I was very pleased that minimal expense and unexpectedly little time corrected both issues (map lights, sunglasses door) in the console assembly. |
