Default accord swap

Hello, I am new to the forums and I have a 1996 accord 2.2 non v-tec auto. I got the car a few months ago and before I could replace it the timing belt broke, I dont want to take the chance to take it to a dealer and get i fixed only to find out the valves are crushed... So I am thinking of doing a swap

I can get a f22 v tec engine for $400 (may be able to get it lower) I dont know if its from a obd1 or 2. I dont even know what mine is right now but I will check soon. Im assuming the f22 will be a direct swap? or am I going to have to swap the ECU to?

I dont know if I can do it myself, I have swapped a few old chevy engines before but I dont know about this new stuff. What would be the average cost for a shop to do the swap if I provide the engine?

Sorry for all the noob questions, all this stuff all at once is confusing.

any f22 swap will be a drop in. but if it's vtec you will need a vtec ecu and will have to wire vtec also.
But if your head is the only thing wrong you could just swap the vtec head on your f22 block. ALL f22 blocks are the same. Just the heads are diff. It might be cheaper to buy a head and do a head swap. As the shop cost it all depends on the shop and your area. Call around and get a price quote.

I agree with G22. It would probably be more cost effective to just replace the head. You should be able to find a head for 1-200. Also as another note I would replace the timing belt on the replacement motor, as I assume you are just taking someones word for how many miles are on it. And it is a lot easier to replace when the engine is out of the car.

If you have some knowledge about cars, and the accord is not your daily driver, or can be down for a week or two, I would suggest replacing the engine yourself. It would easily cost half the value of your car to pay someone to replace it, or possibly the entire value of your car. I would imagine a shop would charge anywhere from$600-$1000 to put it in. As it can be time consuming.

And on a final note, don't swap to the vtec just because you think it will be faster. I owned a 97 vtec and a 95 nonvtec and there wasn't much of a noticeable power difference between the two.

Yes SOHC vtec is nothing like DOHC vtec. SOHC vtec is just for fuel economy

Hi everyone,
New to HAF, just joined today, and I have already found answers to questions that I had on swapping out engines. I have a 96 Accord with a blown motor (312K+ miles, which I drove for 13 years from the day I bought it new) with an F22B2 Non Vtec engine that I want to put in an F22B Vtec engine. I have found the answers here in this thread so that I can make the swap and put the 96 back on the road as my towed vehicle for my RV. Thanks for your information and if I need any other information, I will know where to look.
