Default Help with mothers accord

Hi all I was wodring if youguys could offer some help. My mother drives a 1997 honda accord 4 door im pretty sure its a v6. Today she came to my work to pick something up and when she went to put the car in drive it wouldnt let her out of park. The check engine light is on and after a few moment of trying to figure it out we had no success. Any suggestions?

Somewhere near the gearshift lever there's a slot for a key. Push a key (any key or a screwdriver) into there to release the shift lever.

The real problem is the shift interlock that works with the brake lights. Do her brake lights work? It's supposed to prevent you from shifting out of Park, unless you're standing on the brake.

those things do go bad , just replaced 1 on a 05 altima. but if you dont mind it you can just keep using the button with a key method....long as the brake lights are still working of course

Or you can just pop up the shifter console and remove the solenoid and be done with it and NEVER have the prob again.
