Default lx vs ex 2.2

Hi guys, nice forum you have here!

I hoping for a little technical info from you experienced accord guys.

I am looking at getting a 94-97 accord......5sp. I am shooting for the ex as it has 15 more hp and more torque (i want it to pull double duty and pull the odd thing when necessary). I have yet to try out a lx with the 130 hp but just figure i have heard there is a difference so was wanting to stay with the ex.m However, there is a decent deal on an LX locally. What I was wondering was, what is the difference between the LX and ex engines? Are they not both VTEC and SOHC? I did hear that on the older 91-93 era, the only difference was either a different exhaust or intake manifold (can't remember which). Is that true and maybe the case with the 94-97 generation as well?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Basically the thought is, if it is as easy as swapping a manifold to transform it from one to the other, then I would open my options to an LX too since it is a lot harder to find 5sp's.

thanks.

LX is the non VTEC... Only the EX had the 2.2L vtec....
Make Displace. Bore Stroke Vtec? OBD
F22B1 2156 145@5500 147@4500 8.8:1 85 95 sohc yes 1 or 2 1994-1997 Accord EX
F22B2 2156 130@5300 139@4200 8.8:1 85 95 sohc no 1 or 2 1994-1997 Accord DX/LX

so basically you may be able to just swap the head....

I didn't get leather in my EX I guess some do and some don't or it might be more year specific. I say go EX. 15 extra ponies might not sound huge but every little bit helps. I guess it depends on what is important to you and what do you expect to get out out of your car. The LX is no slouch and can be tuned just as well as any EX, just the EX has a head start.

the tow limit is 1000lbs and the auto trans is MUCH better suited for that since the clutch area is much larger than with the 5spd manual.........

I'm with slusher, with what can be done in tuning and modifying, both engines are basically equal. The ex is little over heavier, so you'll have marginally better fuel economy out of the lx. All in all, aside from the moonroof I don't really think you'll notice a big difference between the two imo, just get the one that seems like it has been better kept...

Any idea why it is only 1000Ibs (i would have thought 1500)? I was looking in the book and it appears that is the rating no matter what engine (even the V6). So it definitely it can't be because of the engine since the new Matrix or vibe, for example, are similar weight and 4 cylinder yet only 120ish hp and yet rated for 1500.

Most likely due to the light weight of the car and the size of the brakes you cannot expect a 3000lb car to tow more than 1/3 of it's weight..........
