Default mileage.. SOHC, DOHC

Is there much difference in mileage between the SOHC 2.2 liter and DOHC 2.2 liter?

The power rating (torque) isn't much different, so I'm curious...

Well one thing i know is that the vtec system on the sohc only benefits on the intake valves and the dohc bebfits on both the intake and exhust valves. Unless ima worng some one want to check that.

i doubt it plays much if any difference at crusing speed since vtec is not engaged at those speeds

the difference that plays is fuel management and the fact that its higher compression and puts in a little more fuel, the difference of 40 hp is still 40 hp, so depending on the h22 depends if its a difference of, i think .8 to 2:1 compression over the f22's, then the f22's have 2mm less on the bore but stock, the h22 is less mpg

I personally think that the difference in MPG is affected more by the lower gearing of the trans rather than Vtec. at hwy speeds you are not using vtec anyways

that has to do with part of it, but you have to keep in mind the volume of fuel that needed when you have larger bores, wide gear ratios are usually for sedans/family cars because of the whole fuel economy thing. But when you have a dohc like the h series those have a little more aggressive cam profile to match the whole performance car, so more fuel gets dumped in even when vtec isnt engaged, but i do know by changing the fuel map the h series can get the same gas mileage as the f series if not better, its just a matter of who you tweak the stock maps

would it be safe to say you get better perfomnce on a dohc then sohc becuase vtec is both on intake and exhust values?

the DOHC generally gives you more effecient and yes better performance (stock vs. stock) and is a great engine for doing N/A builds with, the SOHC is probably slightly better fuel mileage (again stock vs. stock) and lends better to turbo'd applications....

Not all Vtec engines have exhaust valves using vtec. F SOHC series and J30a motors are two that come to mind.........
