Well 3 honda dealers told me that I had a leaking rear main seal. I honestly think that it something other than that as well. I always call around to get advise when something goes wrong with my veh. I think it's an internal leak that leaking down in the combustion chamber or directly into the exhaust itself. My car smokes alot after an oil change so that should say something.

One IMPORTANT thing is WHERE is the smoke coming from?

Oil getting into the combustion chember, that smoke will come out the tailpipe.

Anywhere else, say oil getting onto the outside of the exhaust pipe, will make smoke at that location. When you stop, you're better able to see where it's coming from.

The oil is coming from the tailpipe. When I take off from a stop, there is a huge puff of smoke that flows from the exhaust. There is also a very rich, gas and oily smell that is coming from the car.

You may indeed have a leaky rear main seal, but I can't imagine how that can put oil into the exhaust to come out the tailpipe.

Leaky valve seals can allow oil do leak into the exhaust. If it smokes during engine-braking, that suggests intake valves (engine braking = stronger vacuum). This wouldn't be indicated by a compression test, since the actual valve seat can still provide a good seal.

Bad oil-rings can leave too much oil on the cylinder walls, smoking. That's a more serious bottom-end overhaul.

I still don't think a leaky rear main would cause smoke out of the tailpipe just as Jim says. Did the dealers not say anything else was wrong?
Let us know how it goes, but if I were you, I would not get my hopes up about a rear main seal replacement stopping the smoke from the tailpipe.

I talked with another mechanic at a Honda & Acura service shop. He also stated that a rear main seal wouldn't cause the veh to smoke. I have an appointment to get the veh checked out on next week so I will let you guys know the outcome. Thanks for all the responses and advice.

^ I think all 3 Honda dealers all had the same idea to charge you $900+ to R&R the tranny just to replace that stupid seal.

Ok, I had my car looked at and was told that the oil seals were leaking and I may need to have the engine replaced. They quoted me a price of $2900 for a 30 mile motor with 3 month or 1500 mile warranty which also includes genuine honda parts---new timing belt, water pump, rear main seal, thermostat, hoses and belts.

That is absolutely insane. You are surrounded by crooks. You really need to find an honest mechanic. That is sad to me that you cannot find one.

It is insane and it's quite sad that people would rather try and take your money than to tell you what's wrong with your car. I'm no fool and I definetley won't be paying that much for an engine.
