01 accord oil leak 4 cylinder
Driving 140 miles round trip and losing a quart of oil a day. It coming off the timing cover side of the engine. replaced the oil pan gasket, that didn't do it. replaced the cam shaft seal, still leaking. Took it apart again I don't think its coming from the under the timing cover. I'm back to the oil pan or the joint where the oil pump bolts to the block. Put dye in the oil but it not obvious to me where the oil is coming from. The oil is concentrated in the back corner of the oil pan on the drivers side near the oil pan joint. Any thoughts?

There is an oring seal under the rear balance shaft cover that is prone to leakage w/ oil draining from bottom of lower timing belt cover. Balance shaft belt must be removed to access.
Be sure to pin rear balance shaft w/ 4" x 6mm or 1/4" bolt w/ alignment and note orientation of rear balance shaft sprocket pointer w/ oil pump cover to allow correct re-installation. New oring must be purchased from Honda. good luck |
The oil pump housing is "U" shaped so oil leaking from any of the seals ends up at the bottom of the U, then the wind pushes it to the back of the oil pan when driving. 1qt/140m is a lot of oil. Does the front balance shaft seal have a retainer? Pic's:

No the front balance shaft does not have a retainer. The seal is currently in place. I read the blog I order one when I pull the oil pump. Thanks

I replaced the o ring on the rear balance shaft looks like that did it. Thanks for the help.

thanks for posting the fix. It's amazing how much oil can get out around that oring seal.
good luck |
