Default 03 EX VTC Screen Location

Where is the VCT Screen Filter located in a 2003 EX, and what is the procedure for removing and inspecting for blockage? I have a code P0011 showing, and would like to eliminate this as a possible cause. Thanks.

The 4-cyl engine has a VTC system (Valve Timing Control), but I found no mention of "vtc screen" or "vtc filter" in honda shop manual

Code P0011 was described in shop manual as "Variable Valve Timing Malfunction". Quite an extensive set of diagnostic steps to determine root cause.

Any other symptoms beside Check Engine Light?

good luck

Thanks for answering. Autozone showed P0011 UCT System Malfunction. Low oil/pressure. Blocked oil pressure. Failed VCT oil control valve.
I had read somewhere that there was a filter screen ?

My 2003 EX Malfunction Indicator Lamp is on. The engine idles roughly, and was difficult to start a couple of times. It seems to run as normal when driving. The handbook advisies to make sure that the gas cap is tightened correctly, but other than that, offers no real help other than the usual "take to dealer"
Any advice would be appreciated.

Autozone diagnostic came up with two possibilities. P0341 CMP Sensor and CKP Sensor incorrect phase detected.
P0011 UCT System malfunction.

I found the code P0011. See my edited response.

The VTEC system was sensitive to oil level. Check this.

First step was to reset ECM and see if code returns.

Code diagnostics suggest an electrical circuit fault, but it is not labeled as a circuit problem so could be hydraulic.

good luck

Default 03 EX VCT Screen Location

How about #5 here. It's very much like the VTEC spool valves on earlier engines. I'd get a new one because the screen in incorporated into the O-ring-type gasket and the old one is probably hardened with age & heat.

I disconnected the negative battery terminal for an hour to reset the ecu, but the problem remains. The car barely idles now, and stalls after a few seconds. It probably wont make it back to autozone to recheck. Could the code p0341 mean a timing chain issue?

Jim, I have no clue where this is or how to change it or what I need! Could you be a little more precise? Thanks.

P0011 is Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) System Malfunction.

The VTC strainer is part #11 in the parts diagram.

To access it, you need to remove the drive belt, then the power steering pump, and then the drive belt auto-tensioner. I also attached an actual picture showing the location.

After that strainer is cleaned or replaced, you would change the engine oil and oil filter and recheck for the trouble code.

P0341 is usually due to damaged or stretched chain. See attached Honda Service News excerpt:
