Default 04 Accord - Pinging around 3K rpm

Hi All

My 04 Accord (4 cyl auto) is giving a pinging noise as I approach 3rd gear, around 2500 to 3000 rpm. The car has close to 100K miles (152K kms) on it, I burn regular 87 octane gas, and new o2 sensors are $250 Cdn each, too expensive to simply try blindly replacing. I drive the car pretty easy, it usually gets fully warmed on each run, and I do regular(5K) oil changes, car does not use any oil so o2 sensors shouldn't be fouled, or so I think/hope.

Is there anything I can/should do about this?

Thanks
Steve

I think you're about due for the timing belt too .... that install might fix a slight timing issue.

Theres no interval on the chain. Its not a regular maintenance thing.

2004 ECU should be able to tell if the O2 sensors were bad, it would throw a CEL.

Does the noise depend on load? Say 2800 rpm coasting downhill vs. 2800 rpm climbing a steep hill? Spark-knock or exhaust noise would depend on load. Timing chain noise should NOT depend on load.

I looked up the spec for timing chain stretch for someone awhile ago. Ill try to find that. Basically you check how much the tensioner plunger is extended. A chain should last WAY longer than 100k miles. Unless youve been driving around with no oil in the engine.

I have a 04 Accord (v6 6-spd) and im experiencing the same problem. I have about 88k on it and around 2-2250rpm theres a pinging, rattle like noise that lasts for about 2-3 seconds. I havnt been able to identify if its coming from underneath or through the firewall from my engine. The oxygen sensors are brand new, heat shields and exhaust as tight as possible. It's started out mostly when id upshift and would only last for my first 4 gears but i think its starting to get worse. I have no clue what to do with it and id hate to take it into a honda dealership and have to spend an arm n a leg for them to figure it out in 5 seconds when i could just target the problem and have my mechanic take care of it. any suggestions please?

Careful in case this thread turns into atiming chain discussion. The V-6 has a timing belt, while the 4-cylinder (K-series) that has a chain.
