are these problems related? similar cause? what shared systems between the two vehicles could cause this?

Noises are difficult. Without hearing both cars firsthand, how can we say if the problems are related in any way?

agreed. but most of the advice on these forums is done on speculation to some degree.

I hear stories of Seafoam resolving knock issues like discussed here.
What do you all think,worth a try?

No. Knocking usually can't be "cleaned"

Check plugs and wires. Sound like detonation to me,your plugs are most likely fouledcausing either a lean air/fuel mixture.
