I was driving the afternoon of a late evening predicted heavy snowfall here in SW lower Michigan when I noticed that it was getting rather cool in the cabin of the car. I was driving in stop and go traffic so I turned up the fan a notch. Then another when it did not get any warmer. So I cranked it up all the way but no blower. Almost simultaneously, I noticed my check engine light went on. I hightailed it home knowing that if it started snowing hard, I'd be out of luck with my defrost unless I was traveling fast which was not the case. Anyway, I looked at the fuse under the hood and it looked like it was OK. Do those motors give out like that in a 5 year old car? Any ideas if the check engine light and this motor failing could be linked? Thanks in advance.

I really don't think the CEL is connected in any way to the blower motor. I would do a check of the engine oil and see if anything is loose or looks out of place under the hood. After that, just take it to an Advance Auto or Auto Zone and have them read the code. As far as your heat not making any difference, (still feeling cold), see if your engine temperature is in the normal range. If it is low, then you might have a stuck open thermostat..... Just some ideas.

There is a HVAC code writeup in the DIY section. Try that procedure to see if the HVAC system has a problem.

Also do as Mike suggested, stop by a parts store and have the codes scanned to see what the PCM detected.

Check out this thread also. You might be able to pinpoint a wiring problem.
