1988 Accord LX - Power Steering Leak
I have been noticing for a few weeks and I am unable to find the leak. I can put in a whole bottle of fluid in and the next day or two, it is on my driveway.
I cannot find the source of the leak, but it is definately on the driver side. I thought maybe the pressure hose, but that looks like it connects on the passenger side.
I only notice fluid dripping down the oil pan in that area. The boots on the rack are dry.
What could be the cause? I was thinking worse case scenario, the rack is bad, and how fun would be to replace it?

What does the underside of the hood on the driver side look like? PS shaft seal could be leaking, my tell tale sign has been seeing fluid there on the hood just above where the pump is. Check the return lines coming up from the rack to the ps resivor. Another point is to check the lines to the ps cooler infront of the rad (some models had it LX and LX-i...con't remember on the DX).
PS> If it is the pump, the bolt holding the pulley on is left hand thread......

actually the pressure hose on your car goes all the way around,,,,,,,from p/s pump, in frt of engine ( above exh manifold) around the rt side of engine and all the way back to left side , it attaches to the p/s rack where the other lines are , above the shield.........( p/s pressure hoses mostly they leak at fitting above the exh manifold ).
1 bottle every 2 days, it should be a pretty easy leak to diagnose.........
pull the vacc hoses from the p/s rack boots, turn the wheel all the way to one side and then the other ,see if fluid comes out of the boots.

No fluid in the upper part of the motor or on the hood. It is all on the drivers side, and it looks like it is leaking down the block to the oil pan.
The rack does not have any fluid on the outside, so it leads me to believe it is either the pump, or it could be a low pressure hose?

You should probably clean it up real good (SimpleGreen or some kind of degreaser). Then watch carefully where the leak STARTS. After driving around, the oil blows all over making it difficult to tell where it really comes from.
Jim,
Yep, can't tell where it is leaking from. Where ever it is, it is getting worse.
The last time I put PS fluid in it, I put it in, turned the wheels and put more in, and it was almost gone! I couldn't see it leaking though.

That much, that fast. Has any work been done on the car lately? How low was it when you put fluid in, turned the wheel and had to add more? You said something about "It is all on the drivers side, and it looks like it is leaking down the block to the oil pan", where exactly on the block is it running down? I can then look at mine and see if I can help more.
sorry, no offense ,,, but i find it hard to accept that you cannot locate a leak that big,,it is not as if it is a drop here and there
have you had car up and looked underneath??
did you pull the vacc hoses from p/s rack boots and see if fluid comes out??
are the hose clamps tight ?? did you visually chk all the hoses ?? A leak that big should be easy to locate

There's one place that can hold a lot of PS fluid without leaking out. The rack boots #10 are supposed to have air inside - not fluid. Leaking rack seals can fill the rack boots up with a bunch of oil before it leaks OUT.
