Default 1990 VSS. Need more info.

1990 Accord.4 door w/AT

About 6 months ago i pulled my VSS. I was attempting to get my Tach and therefor my cruise control to work. I cleaned off the VSS, looked it over, put new grease on it and re-installed it. Tach and CC immediatly worked.

Fast forward 6 months and again my Tach is out as is my CC. So.... When i take the VSS out again is there something else i should look for? Is it not just a prox or similar sensor. Seamed like it had no real moving parts. Any way to check it off the car. Hate to replace it if i do not need to. Did some searching but did not find anything.

Thanks

It picks up the rpms by induction (i think) and sends a signal to the ECU. The VSS may be broken internally. Be careful not to loose the drive link that sits below the VSS when you change it.

There is a permanent magnet rotor inside the housing that turns and induces a small voltage in a coil. The pickup sensor can get covered w/ grease and degrade the signal. You might pull the cover (3 screws) and clean, relube (sparingly), and reinstall. A new VSS can be purchased on ebay very reasonably (< $25 last time I checked).

good luck

The Tach is in no waycontrolled by the VSS;
Is the speedo operating ??
The cruise control unit is located under dash beside the steering column.
Here is a link for testing;

Fast forward more time. Been working on the cooling system so i looked at this again.

Hondadude. Speedo is working fine. The Tach comes and goes. Usually it will start out dead and then literally "jump" to life a few miles down the road. This jump has been taking longer and longer though. Once it jumps to life it stays working till the next time i start the car.

No other isses with the speedo pod. The CC still does not work.

Last time i pulled the VSS, cleaned it and re-lubed it. That "seamed" to immediatly fix the tach and the CC but it did not last very long. Maybe a month or so.

Pulled the VSS again since i was in there. Cleaned it again.

So, what could cause the Tach to do this? Where should i start looking.
Are the Tach and the CC connected in that if once does not work either will the other?
At some point i found a CC troubleshooting guide. Went thru part of it. Since it was "fixed when i messed with the VCC i never finished.

Thank you.

Thanks

The only reason I can think of connecting the VSS with the tach, is the possibility that you unplugged something in the wire harness. Unplug & plug it back in burnishes ALL the pins in that connector, which might include the tach signal in there somewhere.

The tach signal comes from the ignitor, which is inside the distributor. Did you unplug anything there?

Unplug anything at the back of the instrument cluster? Same story.

Jim,

Are you saying that the tach comes only from the ignitor? If that is OK then it is only wiring between the two? I can try and trace that.....

Are the CC and tach mutually exclusive? Anything about both of them acting up a clue?

I went after the VSS on someones advice. Before that i had never even heard of it so nothing was touched. I did replace/rebuild the dash cluster about 2 years ago. Started off as replacing the dash after a break in. My gas gauge was bad so i swapped it as well so the speedo cluster was opened up but to the best of my memory the tach was acting up before that.

I have been in the distributor. Seams like i replaced something in there below the rotor. Will have to look in my tool box. I know i bought a aftermarket part for the insides of the distributor. Something electrical but I am not sure i ever replaced it. If i did or did not this problem pre-dated it.

Will report back.

#1 (#13 depending on how you look at it) is the ignitor. #18 is the coil.

The tach signal comes from the ignitor. I think it might be a blue wire, but not real sure about that.

the only thing that they have in common is the RPM input which comes from the igniter blue wire,, make sure that the wire is not loose on the igniter ..
wires go to a connector behind the under dash fuse box ....i hope that someone can upload the picture of the under dash box for you ,,,it is connector c407

also make sure that fuse # 4 under dash box is ok ..

also look at Hondadude schematic , it tells you how to test the blue wire for input at cruise control unit ( test # 6 )
