I just bought a 1992 Accord to drive back and forth to work. It has 182,000 miles and seems to run pretty good except for one thing. AFter I start it up and it runs a couple of minutes the idle starts going up to about 2500-3000 and then drops to 800-1000. It justs keep doing this. The engine does not surge when I have the gas pedal pushed down, but when I am driving and let completely off, it starts doing it again, even at 60 mph. The car probably wasn't taken very good care of, displayed by no thermostat (which I put one in), the need for new reat struts, (which I put on). I also put new antifreeze in. The batteries, spark plugs, wires, air filter were replaced when I bought it. Also someone has replaced the catalytic converter with a straight pipe. I haven't spent the money for that yet. I got the car for $450, which is cheap enough, but it is not turning out so cheap. Anyway, I checked the resistance on the O2 sensor, like the Haynes manual says to. A-B reads open (which the manual says it is supposed to read 30-40, and A-C and A-D read open, which it says is good. My question: would the O2 sensor cause this? Or is it something else? Any help would be appreciated.

I had a similar problem with my 91 accord the rpms reved up and down at idle but it ran fine. If you have the same problem eventualy the car wil die on you while driving, you will be able to restart it but eventualy the car will not run unless you hold the ignition switch forward right before it engages starter. It's been a while and I had a mechanic replace the part. It was under the hood. It had to do with the ignition system. I believe it was the ignition modual. I don't remember the exact name but I do know it was under the hood. Hope this helps.
