Default 1998 Variable Valve Timing Solenoid

1998 Honda Accord LX Auto - 4 Cyl 180,000 miles

Car was getting the transmission rebuilt. It is done, but just got a call that there is an oil leak. I knew about this, but had trouble locating the leak. Usually have to add about 1/2 quart a month (about every 500-1000 miles). They said the leak is coming from the "Variable Valve Timing Solenoid".

They want about $250 to do this. Is this something I can do? I have not had time to look this up and have no idea what it is. I do work on the basic stuff on cars (starters, brakes, brake calipers, alts, fuel pump replacements, etc). Is this a challenge to replace, or is it almost like changing the alternator?

Was it rebuilt or just in for work. You stated it was just rebuilt and any good rebuild will have the solenoids replaced. Ask them why if they did not replace it? Otherwise, yes, it is an external part that with some mechanical skills can be easily replaced.

The trans was rebuilt. As for the oil leak, I am sure that has nothing to do with the transmission. Ok I will take a look at it and see how it goes...
