The plastic top of the key that encases the electronics has cracked right beside where the key shaft comes out. Tightening the small screw does not help and I do NOT want to glue and clamp it. The remote has the lock/unlock/trunk/panic in red buttons on one side and the small screw on the other.

The question would be can this plastic encasement be purchased separately so as I can remove the broken one with all of the electronics still intact and replace with a new one?

Any ideas?

Sounds like just what you need. I never had to replace mine, but when you put a new battery in there, that cover comes off so installing a new cover is just like replacing the battery.


Sounds like you need part #22 in this picture? It's something like $4 or $5 at the dealer.

 

Thanks jimblake. I think what happened is that someone inadvertently hit the key with their knee whilst the key was in the ignition. I will aquire those parts and perform the surgery. Thanks a million for the help and the diagram!

 

I called the dealer for a replacement key, and the programming charge. This is what they told me,
1. New iginition key, cut from existing working key $25.00
2. Programming charge, performed by Honda Tech at the dealer. $35.00

does $60+ sales tax sound like the proper price?

Or is the programming something I can do myself?

 

Mystic, it sounds like you're talking about a different problem. Look in the diagram & tell is what parts are actually broken.

If you ONLY need to replace part #22 then it should very cheap. That's just a thin plastic bezel with no electronic parts.

If you need to replace part #21 then you have to get it cut by a key-cutting machine. If you save all the internals (#16) then you shouldn't need any re-programming.

Make sense for each of your different problems??

 

Just the plastic outside. You show #22 in the diagram but I also need the opposite side of it. Take it apart, put new cover parts on and screw the thing back together. The internals are fine.

 

I don't think there is another side to it. If it's not the little bezel #22, then you need the key skeleton #21. Not horribly expensive, but you'll have to get it cut to fit your lock cylinder. Unscrew it & you'll see what I mean. I'd be inclined to try gluing it together somehow. OTOH, I can't see it from here so don't know how extensive is the damage.

 

Or, I could get the uncut skeleton and rob the two plastic parts and discard the rest!

 

Sure, if you can successfully separate the plastic from the metal. I suspect it's molded together & not easy to separate.
