Unhappy 2006 Accord VP High beam won't go off

My 2006 Honda Accord (VP) 4 Cyl. High beam is on ALL time even when the engine is off.
My accord is all stock equipped.

When it first happened I had to unplug the battery to save it.
the following night I looked all over the fuses inside the cabin and under the hood and they look OK.

I checked the lever and it's looks OK :
-small light and head light/low beam turn on and off with no problems.
-high beam (blue) in dash indicator works ok in both high beam position (push) or flash(pull)
-when low beam is off and I pull the lever to flash I get the blue indicator and low beam works while the high beam is on constantly.
all that means to me that the problem is NOT from the control lever, it is somewhere in between

Now the high beam bulbs are unplugged till I can find a solution.

Any one knows what's going on?

Looks like it is time for testing.

Pretty sure the '06 has DRL. So we need to begin with the DRL module then check the under hood relay box.

Have a volt meter and some time?

PS - Welcome to HAF

1. With the ignition turned ON and headlight switch turned off, do the Daytime Running Lights (DRL) come on normally at reduced brightness? Or are the DRL at full high beam brightness (not normal)?

2. With the ignition turned off, you stated the high beams stay on. Are they at full brightness or reduced brightness when they stay on?

If the DRL come on at reduced brightness under normal conditions with the ignition ON or at START and the high beams remain on at full brightness when the ignition is turned off, it probably is not the DRL control unit. In addition, the DRL control unit is not supposed to supply voltage power to the high beams when the ignition switch is off. The DRL control unit is supposed to supply reduced voltage power to the high beam headlights only when the ignition is turned to ON or START and the headlight switch is OFF.

The way the DRL works (for U.S. models) is if the ignition is turned to the ON or START position and the headlight switch is turned off, the control block in the relay control module senses that there is no voltage supplied to the control block from the low and high beam headlight relays, then voltage is supplied through the DRL control unit to the high beam headlights. The DRL control module has a resistor in it to limit/reduce the voltage going to the high beam headlights (DRL = high beams at reduced brightness).

If the high beams are at full brightness and won’t turn off, I would kind of suspect it’s either the combination switch control unit, the relay control module, or the multiplex integrated control unit (MICU). You can remove the steering wheel column cover, and unplug Connector B from the combination switch control unit on the right; if the high beam stays on, then that is more indication it may be something like either combination switch control unit or relay control module.

  • Relay control module - The high and low beam headlight relays are located within the relay control module (built into under-hood fuse/relay box). The relays receive battery voltage at all times. The grounding and operation of the relays are controlled by the multiplex system.
  • The headlight Switch (The light switch assembly (on the left side of the steering column) has a wiring harness which has a connector (Connector B) which runs to and plugs into the Wiper Switch Assembly on the right side.
  • Combination Switch Control Unit (The combination switch control unit is built into the wiper/washer switch assembly on the right side of the steering column.) Connector B from the headlight switch plugs into this combination switch control unit.

thanks Poorman212
thanks Redbull-1

My High beam is on with full brightness ALL the time ( switch on or off- engine on or off).

I want to start with the easiest solution (the relay) but the relay box located inside the fuse box under the hood looks sealed to me and I can't remove the cover. but there is a screw to remove the whole thing, I'll try that first.

Just to confirm, when you turn the ignition ON, and leave the light switch off, high beams are still on at full brightness and not at reduced brightness?

The relay control module is built into the under-hood fuse box. If that was faulty, you may have to change the under-hood fuse/relay box.

While the problem can still be the relay control module or something else like the combination switch control unit, unplug the 14-P grey connector from the DRL control unit (located under the driver's dash). Does the high beams still stay on?

Poor man and red bull,
Problem solved.
I removed the steering wheel cover( top part) and unpluged the white connector. Then I went out and I plugged my high beam bulbs. I noticed that my high beam bulbs were off. I turned on my headlight on low beam and high beam and it was working perfectly. Then I reconnected the white plug and I put everything back together. Now my car is running like new.
what I forgot to tell you is my car has over 250,000 miles on it and probably the problem was caused by the high mileage and vibration over years. Thanks a lot. I forgot to mention that playing with the relays and fuses led me to nothing.

Glad you got it solved. Sounded like a connection or intermittent problem with the light switch then.

Out of curiosity, which connector did you unplug; Connector A or Connector B?

If it was Connector B, then it may have been the light switch. If it was Connector A, then it may have been the combination switch control unit.

I disconnected and reconnected the white plug. That is the one on top middle closest to the lights lever.I took a picture of it but the website won't allow me because my pictures are too big.I don't want to use the letters A or B because we have more than one for the letter B so it's going to be confusing to use the letters.
