I just wanted to be sure. As long as the cam sprockets line up like in the picture I attached, then you have the timing set. If the balance belt is off, then engine will vibrate more, but the idle, etc should be ok.

When you refilled the coolant, did you bleed the air out of the system?

If you didn't bleed the air out of the system, I would drain the coolant into a clean bucket from the radiator. Open the bleeder valve on the thermostat housing with a 12 mm deep socket. Turn temperature dial to hot inside the car (allows coolant to flow through heater core).

Fill the radiator with coolant. Close bleeder valve when air stops spitting out and a steady stream of coolant comes out. Top off the radiator with coolant. Reset ECU by pulling 7.5 backup/radio fuse. Start the car and allow it to warm to operating temperature to relearn the idle.

I've always been able to bleed air out by opening the radiator cap then opening the bleed screw. You might not need to drain it. The cap & the bleed screw are the 2 high points where air likes to hang out. Then close the bleed screw, top it up at the radiator cap, & close it up.

Bleeding the system worked well. I now have an idle of 1400 but ran out of time to check anything else. When we tried to bleed it we noticed that it wasn't moving water and replaced the thermostat, bled it and then the idle came down. I know it's missing because of the old, oily plugs and have replacement plugs but couldn't find my plug gapper and I live about 30 miles away from any store that would sell one so that will have to wait till tomorrow.

Thanks for all the advice so far, I will let you know if I am able to get it to a normal idle with what you all have told me so far or if I need to come back to the well for some more knowledge.

When you're done with that, look for one of my posts with instructions about setting the base idle.
