5th gear
Hi folks, love the forum and all the great info. I just have a quick question for discussion. I have a 1987 accord with almost 300,000 miles. I was driving along recently and my fifth gear just went away. Its like its in neutral but with a very faint grinding noise. Is this common? Hard to fix? Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds terminal to me. Do you still have all the other gears? Not that it matters, if you want fifth again I think you'll need a new box. If you have other gears at least the car is currently mobile, be grateful it wasn't the input gear on the first motion shaft (been there a couple oftimes, not on a Honda though).

1987 Accord? It's a fairly easy fix. (if it's what I think it is)
I'm guessing your transmission oil level got low and 5th gears got overheated/damaged from lack of lube. They can be accessed under the side cover, the trans can stay in the car to do it.

Here's one I did a few years ago, the car had 460,000 miles on it at the time. The bad thing was we told him it had a leaking axle seal the last time it was in for service, he declined the repair. This was the result:
