I have an 88 accord, carbureted with a 5 speed. Recent tune-up to include a carb rebuild and filter change. The car still runs rough after warming up. Dies at idle and when it does run on its own and I turn it off, it diesels. Any ideas? Thanks.

 

It sounds almost like a timing issue to me, make sure your car is idling properly (around 750 RPM's I believe) and then check your timing

 

I second what sir_nasty said. Car isn't running hot or anything right?

 

Car doesn't appear to be running hot. The first problem that I encountered was bucking during acceleration, then it began to stall at intersections. I replaced fule filters, plugs and wires and rebuilt the carb. I checked the idle solenoid and it is working fine. What purpose does the computer located under the seat serve? I only see the idle solinoid and electric choke. I'm assuming it is tied in with the emissions because it has an O2 sensor but what else is it for? Anyway, back to the timing. I may just buy a belt and replace it. How dificult of a job is that? Thanks sir_nasty and Slusher for your replies.

 

Run some carb/fuel injector cleaner through it also, but first just get a timing light and check it, unless you've got about 80k miles on your timing belt I wouldn't replace it yet (unless you want to of course), just get a light and check it or mess with it and guess... Loosen up the distributor and give it a try with the light

 

Do not waste your money on a timing belt that is not the problem .. sounds more like a vacc leak to me,, have you checked the pcv valve ? or any other vacc leaks?? is float level ok ?? what rpm does car idle at ?? if rpm are too high the engine will diesel uponshutting it off.. also you need to chk to make sure that the main jet on the bowl did not come off or partially off ( jet is located left lower corner on the bowl )

I replaced the PCV valve last month and I also checked all the vacume lines. They all seem to be fine. When I place my hand over the top of the carb, it wants to stall so I don't think I have a vacume leak. The fuel level is in the middle of the site glass. I will look at the main jet. The car has 186,000 miles and I have only owned it for 2 months so I'm not sure what type of maintenance it has had prior. Anyway, thanks for your advice and I will let you know what I found.

 

What RPM does your car Idle at?

 

Ok, I checked my idle speed at lunch and it was around 1000 rpm. This was based on the guage on the dash. To me, it sounds lower but my wife accuses me of selective hearing so it may be that high.Anyway, I need to come up with another tach and try again.

 

Based on that 1) the car is idling a touch high, should be around 750 rpms, that in itself can cause diseiling... however, is the car ever hard or "hesitant" to start a little bit? If your timing is advanced (easy fix) then it would cause the high idle and the disieling... Here's the manual pages on checking/setting timing... set your timing properly and then check the idle, remember to move in small incraments, after that's done and the timing is set then check your idle and adjust it to 750 as needed
