91' Accord Trunk Leak Question
Hey all! My trunk has started leaking and I'm not sure where it's coming from. I asked my friend about it since he has a 90' and he took a few pictures for me. I discovered he had a trunk lid seal on his trunk lid and I don't have one on mine. I have one on the trunk itself but not on the lid. Could this be why it's leaking? I notice that both sides of my trunk are wet too. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yeah, looks like there's supposed to be a weatherstrip around the lid (#14 in picture).
I think the taillight gaskets are also a common place for water leaks, so check them. |
I would definitely replace missing parts. Here is a parts blowup of the 91LX.
#14 is the trunk lid seal: http://www.hondapartsnow.com/diagram...lid-460269.png I can't tell if that part goes on the trunk lid, or the body of the car. The part is pricey at the dealership (~$100), so I would try to find one at a junkyard. I don't recall reading about that seal failing, so it may be worth a shot. The tail lights were known to leak either at the seals or through cracks in the plastic. Take a close look at your tail lights. |

Couldn't hardly believe it, but 'twas fact. |
Thanks all for your replies, I checked the taillight gasket/seal and it seems that my left taillight is the culprit. Should I go to the dealership to get the part or does anyone have any recommendations as to where to purchase it online from a reputable place. Thanks again!

I've bought stuff from Majestic Honda, they've been OK
www dot hondaautomotiveparts dot com Check the dealer prices because sometimes you make it up in shipping where you don't really save any money. |
The gasket, you can get a new one and install.
I've had luck with pulling the light (4~5 8mm size nuts and pull the light towards the rear). Gently remove the old gasket and clean the surface of the gasket (wet towel) and the tail light-body surface where the gasket seats. Let it dry. Then apply a thin layer of silicone to both sides of the gasket and re-install. I'll have to note this...usually it is the right/pass side that leaks.........so you might do both just to be sure. |
On my 90 Accord both taillight gaskets had gaps which allowed water to enter the trunk.
I cleaned the gap with isopropal alcohol and a Q tip, then applied a bead of black silicone to fill the gap. Problem solved. Be sure to silicone as it is flexible. I did not need to loosen any nuts or bolts. |
