Question 91 accord wheel question

Hello,

I went to the wheel forum followed the link but did not see any way to post a new thread about a question I have..

I have a 91 Honda Accord LX, when I got it it ran good for about a month or 2 then the tire almost came off and stripped all the lugnut screws and such, I figured maybe when I bought it the person who sold it to me did not screw the lugnuts all the way on..

So now I am having the same problem again months later, after buying a new rim and replacing the screws and lugnuts, here are some pictures of it..

any ideas? could something else be causing my lugnuts to keep getting loosened, like say really bad alignment on the car or a bad tie rod or something? or has anyone has the same problem? thanks in advance for any help! I need this car working correctly to get to school

The studs may be stripped on your hub. You can buy new wheel studs and replace them.

I read a DIY on this a while back. You have to take off the brake caliper, pads, then the bracket. Turn the hub until the stud is at the 9 o'clock position, because you will be able to access the stud from behind.

Use a mallet to repeatedly hit the stud (make sure to only hit the stud). Feed the new stud in from behind. Use a lug nut to tighten the new stud until it presses into place.

Thank you for your answer, but I know that the studs are stripped and I will need a new rim.

My main question is that When I first got the car the same thing happened, were slowly my lugs were being unscrewed somehow and my wheel almost flew off while driving to walmart, I heard a weird loud noise so pulled over while it was on its last lug.

I broke 2 of the studs trying to take the lugs off that same tire, so I had the studs, lugs and rim replaced.

This is the second time it has done the same thing, so I am thinking that maybe some other part of the car is causeing it to keep making the lugs unscrew slowly, maybe a really bad alignment? or have you or anyone else had this problem? I would hate to just replace the studs, lugs and rim again and then it happen again in another couple months and waste 100$ for a 3rd time.

I would like to find the root of the problem, why does my front driver wheel keep slowly unscrewing and falling off..

I am no car expert though, I am in college for computers so I need some help. This car is suppose to get me back and forth from school and home, and to the store sometimes, so I need it to work properly.. nothing high powered racing or fancy, Plus I am learning more about cars by fixing all this stuff myself.

Sorry, but I can not edit just add another post..

could this happen if say someone had beef with me and barely unscrewed one or two lugnuts? then after a while it would wear out like that if not noticed?

Sorry, I didn't realize that you replaced everything the first time it happened.

I would check your suspension for a severely worn out ball joint or tie-rod end, because a wheel should never work itself off like that on new studs and lug nuts.

In order for an alignment to work off the wheel like that would cause some major driving problems that you should notice immediately.

The sabotage could be another possible explanation. Do you have a lot of enemies? All kidding aside, you would have to somehow mark your lugnuts and monitor them daily to see if someone turned them.

PAhonda, Thanks, I will check the first option first. it is weird though because my car ran good for a month or month and a half until the wheel started falling off the first time, then after i fixed it, it did it again, so I am thinking sabotage but will check the first option to make sure. I also had a friend who bought a new used car around the same time and his tire almost fell off and had the same problem and we both know the same person who is suspect. If it turns out to be the suspect, then maybe I will post a youtube video of me and my friend stomping his face into dog****, I think it maybe someone with high passive agressive behavior, by turning a couple lugnuts instead of confronting a person in their face like a man.

From your photos it looks like you have the wrong studs as the serrated part is well beyond the rotor and should be threaded almost to the rotor. The nut would contact the shoulder before it clamped down on the rim. Are these Honda lug nuts and studs?

I almost didn't catch the long shoulder on the studs. I had two paragraphs of what could have happened when installing them and took one more look at the photos. I had to replace one my 1995 not too long ago and they didn’t look like that. The lug nuts look like they are for a mag wheel with a center cap that covers the lug but could be generic none Honda ones. It is best to use Honda parts unless the cost is too much or you know the quality and fit is the same or better. I like to order from Majestic Honda where you look up your own parts and save about 30%. I find dealerships will sometime give generic fasteners rather than order what you need at times but not something like lug nuts and studs.

Thanks, I just got new studs and lugs from auto advance today. I have a engine genius that I bought the car from and has a professional shop. I myself know what a normal guy is suppose to know about cars, like changing the oil and filter, tires, radio, ect.,. I have the honda manual for the car i bought off ebay. Is there some kind of major difference between a 91 accord front wheel stud / lug then one ordered directly from honda that costs more? Any tutorials on how to check the suspension or ball joints like advised above? Alos a tutorial link on how to check or fix my alignment on a 91 honda accord lx would be very helpful. I dont have money just to pay people to fix my old non-working 1000$ car.. thanks btw; it is also fun to learn this stuff and important EDIT:: can someone also please point out where the tie rod is on my car...? PLEASE? and is there a difference between a tierod and tierod end?
