Default 95 Accord Valve clearance check, is it hard to check yourself?

Hi, had a previous post about getting a valve check done and begin to wonder if I could do it myself. How hard is it? Have done brakes, starters, and alternators but major surgery on a car I have not done. Know a feeler gauge is needed and believe there should be a slight drag on the feeler gauge to check it, is a torque wrench needed and how good of a torque wrench? Where would one find information about this? Can you some how describe how difficult it is for someone who has never had the valve cover off and it does need adjustments? Forgot to say it's a 95 Accord four cylinder V-Tec. Thank you.

Search for P7wI4EtZSaA on YouTube. That is an ericthecarguy video on how to do this properly.

Yes, that is the "middle" of the range in inches.

My pleasure.....just be sure the engine is COLD or it will be off. I usually do mine in the morning after it sat overnight....good luck.

just did it this morning and i am amazed at the difference. i highly recommend that anybody with decent mechanical abilities should go ahead and do it themselves if it needs it.

can you explain how you think it was different?

I have been thinking about doing it on my car but I have read many times that it makes almost no difference.

my engine is at 190k miles and the valves have never been checked. whenever i would start the engine, especially recently, there would be a lot of ticking and it would kind of quiet down as it warmed up. now when i start it up there is still a little ticking (probably from the valves that i couldn't get stuck adjustment bolts loosened) but the engine starts up much quieter and idles much better too.

the second thing for me i hope to see is gas mileage improve. just from the little driving i did yesterday, my engine brake has been significantly reduced. before the adjustments were made, i would take my foot off the gas going down hill and the engine drag was horrible...now it feels like the car just coasts right down the hill smoothly with very little engine brake.

these are the only couple of differences that i've seen SO FAR, i haven't seen any negative effects but so far im very excited and satisfied by the results.
