Thanks everyone - the problem was the engine thermostat sticking open. Engine reaches 180 in about 10 minutes or less, when it does, SNICK the torque converter locks just right. But never before 180 degrees. BTW the stealership wanted $360 to replace the pan gasket - it turned out to be a loose oil filter causing a leak! BEWARE.
