I picked up a 97 Accord v6 from the auction yesterday. I got home and fired it up and I noticed the tach does not work, it just sits there @ 0. is this from the ignition coil?

 

check fuse box. then check schematics for the ecu and look for the ecu plug/wire might be damaged

 

The tach signal is generated by the coil on the 95-97 V6 accords.

 

but the signal has to go through the ECU, right?

 

I think that it comes straight from the coil.

On the 4cylinder, the tach signal is generated from the ignition control module and it does not route through the ECU. I will assume the V6 is the set up the same way.

There are some resistance tests that you can do on the coil to see if it is in spec. If you look at the the plug on the coil, the pin label will be:

A B
C D

A - C resistance should be 0.3-0.4 ohms @68 Fahrenheit
B - D resistance 14-22 kilo-ohms @ the same temp

 

Tach signal comes from different places over the years.

Just for the sake of complete information, on the 4-cylinder engine, beginning in 1998 the tach signal comes from the ECU.

 

97 Accord LX V6. I have a similar problem that I have been fighting for 7 months. It all started with the tach going crazy then the car jerking then just running fine. I then replaced the following: ignition control module, cap, rotor, plugs, wires and eventually the distributor. When I replaced the distributor it threw code P0725 (Engine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction) because the tach started going crazy again and eventually read nothing. So I replaced the VSS today. Took it for a drive, no tach, but it didn't jerk either. I only drove it for about 10 minutes though. Please help!!

 

I believe the ignition coil is not part of the distributor, so did you replace the coil? On the V6, the tach signal comes from the coil.

You may also want to check that the electrical connections at the coil are all clean and plugged in properly.

 

When you say coil what are you referring to? Do you mean the cap and rotor? Thanks

 

No, the cap and rotor send the spark to each of the spark plugs.

The coil is what generates the spark and I believe that it is located outside of the distributor on your car.
