Default 97 Inner tie rod squeek

Hey everyone, my 97 6cyl as been making a mean creakin/squeeking noise when turning. It's coming from (what seems to be) the passenger inner tie rod. While laying under it, the noise seems to be coming from right in the boot, but the boot is in perfect condition.

is this a normal symptom for when it wears? what else could it be if not? any write-ups that you know of to replace it? thanks.

Rack n pinion may just need to be lubed up. Get a boot kit. Grease up the geared shaft that the worm gear rolls on.

Also hold your wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock tug on both ends and observe any tie rod play. Replace if there is play

There's an inner tie-rod end ball joint that could be dry also.

good luck

The tie rods don't have any play in them.

So I should put a new boot on and pack it with grease before replacing the whole thing? Is it easier to just replace the whole thing?

Also, you guys will have to excuse my realitive ignorance when it comes to certain stuff. Most of my experience comes from working on and building up jeeps.

This is where that lack of knowledge comes in that I was talking about Haha. I have no idea where this is. Happen to have a parts diagram?

Parts 1 in the diagram of post linked by Poorman is the inner tie-rod ball joint. It's call "end set" in the parts list. This is the part that needs to be greased.

good luck

so looking at all this, it doesn't seem like much more work to just replace the whole inner tie rod. if i get it all apart and the joint is really flimsy, how easy is it to get a wrench on the hex-part of the inner tre to turn it out?

the squeek sounds really weird, every time there is tension on the steering components. like i said, from underneath, it sounds like it's coming from right in the boot. could it be something in the rack and pinion "housing"?
