'98 accord auto trans problems
Hi all,
I did some searching on this forum but couldn't find definitive answer to this problem:
1998 Accord EX with auto tranny. It has the following problems:
1. extreme hard shift from P to D4, like loud hard clunk everytime you move from P to D4.
2. extreme hard downshift when comeing to a full stop, same as above.
3. when slowing down to between 5 - 10 mph and then accelerating, the engine over revs and then transmission engages with HUGE loud clunk, extreme hard engagement.
4. over revs during shift from 1st to 2nd
5. on hard acceleration severely overrevs ( almost red lines) in up shifting.
Can anyone shed any light on this ?
How much does it usually cost to have an auto tranny rebuilt ? or is it a specific component that can be replaced without rebuild ?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

RE: '98 accord auto trans problems
unfortunately you will be spending about $3400 to get it repaired. You might get some assistance from HOA but that depends upon your car's milage. Is it a V6?
The problem is you have lost your 2nd gear clutch pack
Does it leak at the axle seals? If so your differential bearings are shot

thanks for the quick reply.
It is a 4 cycl,
and I don't think it is leaking but it does make a high picthed whine that corresponds to wheel speed.
I wonder if I could replace the 2nd gear clutch pack myself.

high pitched whine is torque converter failure most of the time. It could be differential failure as well. Stay away from any shop that does not have major experience with rebuilding these transmisions.
Auto trans work is not for people who are not mechanically inclined. replacing clutch pack requires complete dissasembly and cleaning of auto trans. all parts need to be inspected for wear and replaced as needed. a honda dealer will typically swap out the unit with a rebuilt one and those are crap as well.
Edit: Stay away from AAMCO transmissions as I have heard nothing but HORROR STORIES ABOUT THEM
Good luck

Isn't there also a product called 'sea foam' for auto trannies as well? don't know who makes it.
But in reading the other responses, I am of the opinion that the damage will not be corrected by adding a special fluid and that it is more like damaged clutch pack as YeuEmMaiMai says earlier.
I am trying to find a reputable reman at the moment.
