99 Honda accord lx 2.3l 170k original shocks.


I was watching some youtube videos and one of the guys said with a shock for a strut some of the pistons aren't suppose to come up on their own. is this the case with this car or should the piston come back up on its own? the pull out resistance is still very strong . pushing the piston back is less than pulling out I can push it down with one hand and it takes some effort but does not come back up on its own. I have not pulled apart the other strut to inspect. I am getting a thudding sound from all 4 corners of the car.
know 170k no brainer but at least this front driver still has some ***** left in it or again is it suppse to come up and its def bad? thanks

 

A strut should take some effort to compress and then will slowly come back up.

good idea to change the struts on high mileage cars. I never realized how bad mine were until I got new ones. Go with quick struts. A thud usually isn't causes by strut issues.

And a noise from all 4 corners doesn't seem too likely. Might be a noise that is traveling around but is coming from one spot. Could be anything from bad sway bar links to loose ball joints.

 

sway is tight I checked pretty good I did a bunch of work on it recently

Yeah, they work fine. Are you doing them yourself or having a shop install them?

 

As far as aftermarket goes with Honda's we have found that the KYB's work well. If you are planning on driving the car for another 150k+ then cut to the chase and put in Honda parts albeit pricey. Honda shocks on your generation rarely leak they just age overtime and need replacement in order to maintain car performance/handling. Some food for thought, you might want to replace the lower bushing in the rear while you are doing the job, assuming they are cracking, or the bolt is rusted in.

 

ill be installing them. i still need to find out with the shock out of the strut is the piston suppose to come back up on its own

 

how do you think the spring is with 170k on it ? could it still be fine ?

 

More than likely.

 

Rear more then likely it is fine. Front, that is a whole different ball game. Check for excessive rust near the top of the assembly as that is where they typically snap. The fronts are known for lasting less then the rears in salt/pot hole areas.

 

hmmmm whats lower fork torque? kybs came today gonna put them on , on sunday.
