So it's probably a stupid-easy fix here, but my 1999 accord is now consistently surging after a shade-tree clutch replacement.

It was running beautifully before I had the guy do it, wouldn't skip a single beat, ever.

But after the 2 months of being in my buddy's hands, it's now surging consistently on idle, and will cut if you give it significant amount of gas.

Already checked the spark plugs, the plug wires, drained the tank and put fresh gas in there, etc.

Here's the crazy part. When I disconnect the fuel-pump power connector and start the car up, she runs 100% fine for 60 seconds before dying. Runs just like she did before the clutch job. My first instinct of course is to say "well then I guess it's probably the fuel pump", but I also suppose it could be a lot of other things that resolve after reducing fuel pressure, idk.

My shade-tree man also replaced a couple of sensors, one of which being the temp sensor just beneath the distributor, and also put a good bit of seafoam in the tank before giving her back. She's not road worthy right now, just because she's not getting fuel consistently.

When she idles, it's like it's oscilating between two speeds. Like she's getting too much gas, then cutting, then getting too much, then cutting.

This is blowing my mind guys. If you can figure this one out, you're a genius and a lifesaver. Point blank.

 

To Clarify, the RPMs don't really surge too bad, just between 0 and 1000, but you can hear it oscilating. When you give it gas and let off, it will die completely.

Additionally. the new spark plugs are already covered in carbon.

 

Do you have access to a scanner to read codes or live sensor data?

 

I do, no codes are thrown.

 

How about live sensor data, like coolant temperature, map, etc?

What kind of plugs are you using

 

I did replace the top hose before it went to my guy, but it ran fine after I did that. Didn't take it on the road (clutch was GONE) but still ran even.

Coolant does look full now, but I've just been adding as needed.

 

There may be an air bubble in the engine; that has been known to cause the surging.
