Auto Trans question
I'm a new member so hello everyone! I know everyone is going to say not to do this but I am rebuilding a trans for a 99 Honda Accord ex with the 3.0 Vtec. Engine only has 123,000 on her. The axles were leaking and the guy that gave me the car said he was just buying the cheapest trans fluid to get by until he could afford the axle repair. Honda trans have to have correct fluid as we all prob know. I did many drain and fills to try and save it but no luck. Here is my question. I've read that those trans failed do ti the internal non serviceable filter and the trans cooler not being big enough. Just want opinions if I should upgrade to external filter and bigger cooler? Thank in advance for any advice! Thanks Heath
The 98-02 V6 transmissions certainly have higher failure rates. I think the issue was the friction material in the clutches were designed for a smoother shift and degraded quickly and would start causing valves to stick and clog passages and restrict fluid flow. I also recall a shaft bearing was also problematic. I don't think an inline filter will cause any harm and may be helpful. I'm not sure about adding a larger transmission cooler. I'd probably use the one that is part of the radiator, because I'm not a fan of major modifications.
Transmission rebuilds have a lot of parts and items to check.clean/repair, so take your time and get a decent rebuild kit. I believe your transmission is a BAXA, but check the number stamped on yours. I recommend watching some youtube videos on the BAXA rebuild. I've seen some very detailed videos that should help. I'd watch a few to get a general game plan. The channel called automatic transmission is pretty good. I'd also get a shop manual for your acccord. Automanualsource.com has a pdf for $22 and is worth the investment.

Car was used as storage with windows down for a year! Full of mold and mildew.
New carpet with fresh coat of killz paint after a good cleaning.
Door panels covered in mold.
Soft material wouldn't come clean so wrapped it in a inexpensive leather.
Body was in decent shape no rust just a few dents and only 123,090 miles. Purchase price the cost to haul it out of guys drive way.
