Default Automatic Transmission Shift

I drive a 1991 Honda Accord. the shift says 1, 2, D3, D4, N, R, P. It is an automatic transmission.

I recently noticed that when I start in in 1st shift that I can reach higher rpm's as high as 6, 7, or 8 and take off quicker that way. Once I get to at least 6 rpm's I shift to 2nd and get to at least 5 rpms. Then I shift to D3 then D4 to go faster.

It might be a little faster than starting in just the normal D4, but I was wondering if this does any kind of damage to the transmission or if it might be straining it somehow? Anybody know if it does damage the transmission?

Default RE: Automatic Transmission Shift

The owners manual says that you can drive and shift the car like that but its not recommended. Keep it in D3 for city driving, and D4 for anything over 50-55mph.
