Battery or Alternator ?
I am at 10 vehicles this has happened to and counting.

Currently in my "fleet" I own 5 cars, 1 truck and 1 motorcycle.
One car is a 2006 Civic EX this has not happened to.
The other vehicles I have owned it has happened to (excluding the motorcycle LOL)
If the alternator was near the end the battery failing could finish it off but not every single time. I have only had alternators fail on the American cars I have owned. Batteries have usually given me warning it was time to replace and after five years I now just replace them.
I have started using the red top Optima batteries. IMO they are worth the extra money and I have not had any issues with them.
I must have replaced hundreds of batteries ,,,,,,,,,,and i am yet to see an alternator go bad a short time later because the battery failed,, I have seen where the alter failed and than the battery went out more than once
I think the best advice would be just to check the alternator when ever a battery dies. At least it will give you an indication that ones charging system is working or not.
Sadly, one will never know when the alternator will decide to kick the bucket.
