Default Brake pedal sinks to floor

My daughter is reporting a brake problem with her 1990 Accord. Occasionally when stopping at a light, after she comes to a complete stop, the pedal slowly sinks down to the floor. I took it for a ride, and the brakes felt fine, no sponginess or nothing. Checked the fluid level, and it is good. No obvious leaks. Any ideas?

More than likely it is a faulty brake master cylinder. Fairly common on earlier accords. Same thing happened on my wife's old 95 Accord. Not too hard to DIY if you have someone that can help you, but would not be easy to do by yourself.

Then you would have to bleed the brake lines.

A rebuilt master cylinder is ~$50 at O'Reillys. A new one is ~$100 from the dealership.

Keep in mind that $50 difference could mean that the "rebuilder" put in a different length/type piston and you can wind up with a really deep pedal or the brakes not releasing fully.

It can be air in the lines a bad master cylinder the seal leaks internally between both chambers. It can also be brake fade if your kid drives like a skitso. Do you have abs? Thy had problems with the abs accumulator leaking too. If the problem is in the abs you will soon get a abs code/abs light on.

I am pretty sure that the car does not have ABS. So HondaDude, you are saying it is worth the extra $50?

Use the Honda master cylinder. Trust me I am a cheapskate, but when dealing with something this crucial, you want the Honda part. Saving $50 is not worth it if you are compromising safety. I bought mine form Majestic Honda online. Cheaper than the dealership even with the shipping charges added in.

Don't waste your time trying to bleed the brakes, it's the master cylinder.
