Hi All,

I have a 2006 Accord EX V6 Sedan and for some reason I noticed that the rear brake pads are wearing faster than the front pads. I always thought it was the other way around. Does anyone know why this is happening?
I also noticed the pads on the rear passenger side has already worn down to the metal sensor and is making a noise when going in reverse. Does this mean I have a bad caliper?

Certainly you should rule out a sticking caliper, causing that brake to drag. Clean up & grease the caliper slide pins. Make sure the new pads don't wedge tightly in the caliper bracket (preventing them releasing). Neither one of these is what I'd call a "BAD" caliper, but if it ever overheated because of dragging, maybe it has gone bad.

But besides all that, it's becoming more common for rear brakes to wear out. Back in the day (yeah, I'm old), the rear would last much longer because the rear brakes do a lot less work than the front. Then car-makers began making rear brakes smaller, with softer compounds, so they wear more like the front. So now, sometimes the rear wear out faster than the front.

For the caliper slide pins, high temperature silicone brake grease is recommended.

I like to use CRC caliper grease. Yes the rear brakes wear out faster then the fronts as it is due to the caliper design. If pads move freely in the shims, pistons aren't stuck and the pins slide fine on both the front and rear then the rear pads usually wear out every 60 to 70k where as the fronts should last around 100 to 120k. All is dependent on the quality of the pads and how you drive the car.

 

I cannot imagine any car going 120,000 miles on a set of front pads; heck, I've never even had a car manage more than 50,000 miles on a set, and that was when I was doing a huge percentage of my driving on uncrowded interstate highways with the cruise control set.

 

I have an 03V6 and I can tell you my rear pads wear out quicker than the front pads (usually get 15-20k more out of the front pads). It's normal IMO for 7th gen Accords.

 

The '07 Pilot is the same.....~60K the rear pads went, front still had about 30% left on the front, changed them anyway.

Around 140K I checked them, rear pads down to ~20%. Went ahead and did those. Looked at the fronts and they were fine.

I'm running about ~155K now, so the front pads have been on there just over 90K
