Post Buying the proper catalytic converter.

I have been searching for a California emissions Catalytic Converter for a good time now. Right when I thought I found one I go to order it then I get a message saying it can not be shipped to my address.

I live in california and I need a new cat since I gutted my cat because it was rattling and I did not have money at the time to purchase a new one.

Can someone please help me find an inexpensive one that complies with California Laws so that I can pass smog next year?

I also have a few questions:

1.One is concerning my gas mileage. Would there be a noticeable increase from my 'gutted cat' to a brand new cat?
**Basically what I am asking is, Would I get more gas mileage once I put a new catalytic converter in?

The other question is, has anyone heard about that program where the state gives you up to $500 if you need help passing emissions? If so, how does that work?

Note: The cheapest cat I found was about 300-350 on autozone.

Feedback is much appreciated! Thanks

  1. Your gas mileage may be a little less or about the same if the converter has good flow.
  2. To qualify for the $500 assistance, you would have to have failed the smog test and meet certain income requirements. http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/80_BARRe...CAP%20FAQs.pdf
  3. Magnaflow makes California CARB compliant converters. For 1998 Accord LX, direct fit is part number 446615; universal fit is part number 446054. "http://www.magnaflow.com/02catalytic_converters/02product/shopdisplayproducts.asp"

One site sells the direct fit for $310.99, free shipping.

Another site sells the universal fit for $258.72, free ground shipping.

Thank you so much!!!

I called AutoZone and they priced me @$303 for direct fit and $218 for universal.

As for the emissions assistance, I dont know whether to wait till next year to try to get assistance or if I should just try to get enough money to buy it myself. Ill have to think about that one o.O

If you try to get financial assistance through the Consumer Assistance Program, the repair must be done at a Gold Shield station under agreement with BAR. If they see that the cat is gutted, that may be deemed as tampering of an emission control device which may have negative consequences.

Advance Auto Parts has a Bosal direct fit one part # 089-9105 for $308 apply coupon code P20 it would be $258 use a affiliate site like fatwallet and you can get another 10% off which would be around $225 when all is said and done and free shipping.

I know nothing about Bosal cat converters but its the cheapest carb compliant one I saw.

I live in California, sometimes people living here get too uptight. When I went on a trip to the Southwest before; in general, the people working at restaurants and stores seem genuinely nicer and more willing to help. Me and several friends noticed that and said it seems most people in California must be more stressed at work or something.
