Check engine light on
OBD1 is less specific. For example, a MAP sensor can fail with high or low voltage, or open. OBD2 would have a code for each of those failures. OBD1 would give a code for a MAP sensor and have you do all three tests.
FYI, there are only three sensors that are different between the OBD1 (94/95) and the OBD2 (96/97) 5th generation accords, so the testing is basically the same between them.
Checking the OBD1 way is useful when you can't drive your car to the parts store. It also takes about five minutes of your time to test.

I don't have any of those codes in my 96 manual.
When shorting the connector, the light will come on for about two seconds, turn off for about two seconds, then start flashing the code. A long blink =10, and short blink =1. So LLLL SSS = code 43.
You may want to stop by a parts store and have the scanner hooked up.

I saw a PM where you said the CEL could be a 17. That I can find next to P0500, an issue with the VSS.
Still couldn't find 14 or 44 for the trans, but if the CEL is the 17 then I could see where the trans would also set a code. Is is possible the the D4 light is a code 4 as that would also point towards an issue with the VSS?
Again I would still stop by a parts store and ask them to read the code - get the code number from them and not thier "description" of the issue.
