Default Cold weather issue

My 07 accord 4 cal auto trans will not shift into gear until i give it 20 minutes to warm up even when i'm standing on the brake. it only does this first thing in the morning or at night, ie when it's coldest. does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

I mean you should definitely wait a while to let it warm up, but 20min seems way too long. What kind of cold are we talking about? Providence, Rhode Island cold or Deadhorse, Alaska cold?

Is the transmission sticking, as in it won't let you move the shift lever?

Answer "kayweb" question.......if the shifter is moving but the car will not,

Do you know if the trans fluid has been changed, if so what type of fluid was used.

I've seen too many time when NON HONDA trans fluid is used in a Honda that cold shift issues show up.

I'd also have it checked for codes, there are some that will not trip the light.

I stand on the brake and it won't shift into gear. no service has been done recently beyond a standard oil change, the lever is frozen.

So the gear selector stays in park, and you can not get the button to push in to change it to D4,R,N,....?

Have you tried giving the button a solid whack? It got my odometer working again.
That being said, you should consider flushing your fluid and checking for leaks, it's possible that you have water infiltration into the housing?
