Default d4 light flashing

hello. new accord owner and user here.

i just recently purchased a 1996 accord and now the d4 light is flashing. I have read there is a way to get a code from the flashes. Can someone please step me through this to help me figure out the problem.

The light only flashes sometimes, but when it does the transmission wont shift in D4. I can manually shift it through 1, 2, and d3. But it will not shift on it's own.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Follow the instructions on how to check cel on this link http://www.dhost.info/accordinfo/

The only difference is that you count the D4 flashes instead of the CEL flashes.

okay. i just did that and i got 7 short blinks from the d4 light.

7 shows up as throttle position censor... doesn't make sense for the d4 light.

EDIT:

actually maybe it was 7 long. This gives me:

70 Automatic Transmission malfunction with the automatic transmission controls

what does this mean?

That list of codes are for the ECU when you count the check engine light. There is a different list of codes for the TCU.

Code 7 means there is a problem with the shift solenoid valve A. If you download the tranny pdf on that page I referenced above, you can find the list of codes on 14-50.

A quick test is to look at the end of the code 4 tree and test the resistance on the solenoid. If it is out of spec, the solenoid is likely bad. If it is in spec, you might just have to remove the solenoid and clean it (with something like throttle body cleaner) and the screen due to buildup over time.

well i just checked the solenoids and it seems that one of the connections was pulled out alittle. Hopefully this is the cause! i dont see why it wouldn't be.

It's still showing up 7 blinks when i check it, but maybe it's cause it's still in the memory.

hopefully this fixed it. simple stuff.

You can erase the ecu memory by pulling the 7.5 amp radio(backup) fuse in engine bay fuse box for a minute. Just have your radio code handy to reenter into the stereo. If the code comes back, then you will know for sure that it wasn't a faulty connection.
